520.3.#.a: El papel moneda apareció en el siglo XVII en China y paulatinamente se fue extiendo hacia Europa y posteriormente en América Latina. En México es durante el primer Imperio que se emitieron billetes con letras, aunque sin imágenes. La población en principio los rechazó y más de un siglo después del primer billete mexicano, aún seguían sin aceptarlo masivamente. Cada gobierno tuvo que implementar acciones que revirtieran dicha situación; a la par, comenzaron a emplear imágenes de personajes históricos y símbolos nacionalistas que agradasen a los tenedores, les generase confianza y que subliminalmente les incluyera en su inconsciente la política liberal y gustos personales de los personajes presidenciales. La iconografía en los billetes se ha utilizado en México con diversos fines, tales como, estimular su aceptación generalizada a nivel nacional; medio de propaganda política; impulsar sentimientos nacionalistas e incluso poner de manifiesto los gustos personales de los gobernantes en turno. En este tenor, el propósito del artículo es que al tiempo que se hace un breve recorrido por la simbología en la historia del dinero, igualmente se muestra como la historia del pensamiento liberal y sus relatores, determinaron ¿quiénes o qué se incluiría en los billetes mexicanos? por supuesto, también aquellas imágenes que nunca veríamos en los mismos. Así, la historia de los billetes mexicanos inició con el objetivo de que su uso fuese generalmente aceptado por la sociedad y luego, se ocupó como un medio de transmisión de los ideales económicos o políticos. El contenido lo hemos seccionado en cuatro apartados; uno referente a los billetes durante el siglo XIX; otros dos que describen respectivamente, los billetes en las tres primeras décadas del siglo XX y el contexto de aplicación como herramienta política durante el resto del siglo; finalmente un apartado que incluye el contenido de las familias de billetes más recientes cuya iconografía incluye tópicos de relevancia internacional como el medio ambiente, inclusión y género. Abstract Paper money appeared in China in the 17th century and gradually spread to Europe and later to Latin America. During the first empire in Mexico, banknotes were issued in the form of letters without images. The population initially rejected them, and more than a century after the first Mexican banknote was issued, they were still not widely accepted. Each government had to take action to reverse this situation; at the same time, they began to use images of historical figures and nationalist symbols that would appeal to holders, generate confidence and subliminally include the liberal politics and personal tastes of the presidents in their unconscious. Iconography on banknotes has been used in Mexico for a variety of purposes, such as to encourage widespread national acceptance, as a means of political propaganda, to promote nationalist sentiments, and even to highlight the personal tastes of the rulers in office. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of the symbolism in the history of money, while also showing how the history of liberal thought and the people who wrote it determined who and what would be included on Mexican banknotes, as well as, of course, the images that we would never see on them. Thus, the history of Mexican banknotes began with the aim of making their use generally accepted by society and then became a means of conveying economic or political ideals. We have divided the content into four sections: one dealing with banknotes during the 19th century; two others describing banknotes in the first three decades of the 20th century and the context of their application as a political tool during the rest of the century; and finally a section that includes the content of more recent banknote families whose iconography includes topics of international relevance such as the environment, inclusion and gender
