Resumen
Based on a selection of 80 almanacs and guides published in Río de la Plata between 1819 and 1900, this article seeks to provide an introductory and general historical study (that is, relatively indifferent to local particularities) of this unique genre of printed periodicals in the Latin American world during the 19th century. Some of the main issues covered here are the changes in the material characteristics and contents of the almanac, its links and differences with guidebooks and other related publications, its secularization, the inclusion of advertising, the literature and illustrations of the 1860s, as well as its final splendor as luxury books that emerged due to the wide development of the printing industry by the end of the century.
