520.3.#.a: The arms employed by the Mexica to forge their vast empire were the same as those used by peoples before them for a millenium at least, give or take a few innovations that were introduced along the line, and some of them went back even further in time. They were not only simple by today"s standards of weaponry but also by European standards at the time of the Conquest. Indeed, it was their very primitive nature that guaranteed the defeat of the Indians by the Spaniards despite the overwhelming numerical disadvantage of the latter.
