520.3.#.a: Ausencia López Cruz here transcribes a Zapotec version of "Cinderella" related to her by her father, Nicolás López Morales. This text, like "El cantarito", is also from San Pablo Güilá. The story has been adapted to the traditions and surroundings of San Pablo Güilá. Forinstance, Cinderella, in the Zapotec version called María, goes to a firstparty given by the king for his son, but does not meet the prince. Rather, shearrives late and decides not to join her father, stepmother, and stepsisterbecause she feels she would bother her father. She leaves the party in a hurryand loses her shoe in the process. When servants find the shoe, which glitterslike gold, they take it to the king, who is so excited that he decides to havea second party so that all the young maidens may try it. After that, the fairygodmother provides Cinderella with her coach and gown, as in the morewidely-known version, and she arrives at the party to try the shoe, claim itand show its mate, and then later marry the prince.
