Resumen
Purpose: To investigate the shaping of identity among Yucatecan migrants living in Ensenada, Baja California, based on the diverse interpretations that people create in the dimensions that make up their Mayan cultural heritage, as well as the adjustments, tensions or (re) elaborations that they experience when they find themselves in a location other than their birthplace. Methodological design: Drawing on a constructivist perspective, which informs symbolic interactionism, this qualitative research was conducted through a case study. The research involved in-depth interviews with daughters from a nuclear family and a young married couple. These interviews were conducted during the first half of 2023. The analysis of the information is based on both a horizontal and vertical reading of the dimensions addressed in this article. Results: It seems as though the research participants are in constant reflection and discussion of topics related to migration, Yucatecan culture, including food and identity, and their destination. Research limitations: Given that this is a qualitative study, results cannot be generalized but they can be interpreted to understand a particular social fact, in this case, migrants of Yucatecan origin living in Ensenada, Baja California. Findings: This research contributes to a specific understanding of identity among Yucatecan migrants and how kinship, as a conceptual theory, allows to discuss the role that women and men construct in this northwestern Mexican border state.
