Resumen
This contribution is dedicated to the development of collections in academic libraries, specifically to the aspects of selection and acquisition processes with the objective of identifying the activities that must be carried out to achieve an efficient and effective development of collections. An exploratory documentary research technique was used. The impact of information and communication technology, the preeminence of the study of the community’s information needs, and the importance of formally documenting decisions were recognized. It is concluded that, without planning the development of the collections, the library will not have sufficient elements to demonstrate its value to the community, in the same way that it is inappropriate to improvise in relation to the growth of the collection because, if this is done, the budget will not be applied correctly and the needs of the users will not be satisfied.
