Resumen
The article explores the social conditions that enabled the emergence of the notion of “humanistic mental health” as well as its dissemination throughout the Latin American region by means of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) during the 1960s. To do so, the article undertakes a revision of Erich Fromm’s work, as the author of the concept, and of the documents issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the PAHO. The work demonstrates that the term not only contested the understanding of mental health in its medical-scientific sense but also served as an ideological flagship for the Alliance for Progress in the context of the Cold War.
