Resumen
This paper describes a contentious debate between the Communist Party of Mexico (PCM) and the Regional Confederation of Mexican Workers (CROM) over the use of flags by laborer organizations. My aim is to show a debate that took place in the press, and how the use of the Mexican flag and the red-and-black flag was either denied or promoted through text and images published in El Machete and the CROM magazine. I draw on elements from cultural history, press studies, and art history in order to analyze the propositions that either merged or opposed both emblems. This controversy reveals the tensions between two organizations seeking to lead the labor movement and how they suggested practices for a working-class culture through the promotion of symbols.
