520.3.#.a: We describe a theoretical study of the state of radiative equilibrium of the middle atmosphere; our approach is basically analytic. We introduce a new general method of solution based on the radiative eigenfunctions (natural modes of radiative temperature relaxation in the atmosphere). This method is checked against published results involving purely numerical solutions.
