520.3.#.a: This article uses the structural transformation conceptual approach to study three regional processes in Mexico, examining the effects of economic liberalization and growth on their rural economies. It concludes that rural families deal with the opportunities and dangers generated by these processes by diversifying their activities and sources of income to include areas beyond the sphere of agriculture. This strategy’s success and limitations depend on their resources and the kind of structural transformations taking place in the regions where they live. Modernization based on economic liberalization benefits some rural sectors but preserves the dual character of the rural economy and continued poverty in the countryside.
