Resumen
This essay delves into the study of modern censuses in Spain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, placing them in the context of the rationalization of authority. Utilizing the Weberian concept of the “disenchantment of the world” and applying Aristotelian methodology, it analyzes the ultimate causes of censuses in the Hispanic monarchy and the proximate causes in Yucatan. The ideological role of censuses in the reformist political context of Carlos III and his successors is explored, with a particular focus on those conducted by Benito Pérez (1809-1811) and the first Provincial Council [Diputación Provincial] (1813-1814) by using documentation from these authorities. The essay, divided into six sections, addresses the theoretical framework, competing statistical programs, the mathematization of knowledge, and its implementation in Yucatan. It shows that both statistical exercises demonstrate that both Pérez and the members of the first Council where part of the process of disenchantment of the world, since they shared the conviction that it was possible to know a society with synthetic mathematical methods and also valued this knowledge as a condition for their appropriate government.
