520.3.#.a: In the 1860s, the weekly periodical La Tertulia was the first in Monterrey, Mexico, to include content explicitly dedicated to women. With the aim of exploring the relationship between Monterrey women and the periodical press, this article presents a discursive analysis of the content dedicated to women in 15 issues of La Tertulia (from November 1864 to March 1865), and seeks to uncover the portrayal of women presented in its pages. The article offers a general review of this periodical and then presents an analysis of the contents dedicated to women. This analysis points to a description of women idealized by Romanticism, for whom there is still no recognition of a social function through which they could collaborate actively in society, beyond the domestic domain.
