Resumen
The Transmexican Volcanic Belt is one of the most prominent tectonic features in Mexico. This quaternary volcanic chain extends for more than 1,000 km from the Pacific to the Atlantic oceans. Its E-W trend varies completely from other tectonic directions. This arrangement is the result of the recent tectonic evolution of the southern part of the North-American plate; and it includes the progressive opening of the Acapuloo trench during Oligo-Miocene times due to the relative motions of the North-American and Caribbean plates, and the change in the rotation angle of the Cocos plate which ocurred in late Miocene times. The location and specific characters of the Transmexican volcanic province reflect this tectonic evolution. Three geographic provinces can be defined in the belt:.. ;In order to continue, download the full paper in PDF.
