520.3.#.a: Studies of relations between the southwestern United States and Mesoamerica tend to pay little attention to the groups that populated northern Mesoamerica and played a direct part in those relations. Recent work in the Sierra Madre Occidental and Michoacan allows us to elucidate some of the processes involved in the history of what might be called the ancient Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. In particular, they lead us to recognize the importance of Teotihuacan in the history of the north, not as a metropolis in expansion, as had previously been proposed, but in the framework of the diaspora of its population resulting from its violent destruction. These advances facilitate a fruitful dialogue with the present efforts of Hopi scholars to confront the contributions of archeology with their own oral tradition telling of the migration of several of their clans from a place of origin called Palatkwapi, which might be identical with Teotihuacan. Los estudios relativos a las relaciones entre el suroeste de los Estados Unidos y Mesoamérica suelen prestar poca atención a los grupos que poblaron la Mesoamérica septentrional y que intervinieron directamente en estas relaciones. Trabajos recientes en la Sierra Madre Occidental y en Michoacán permiten dilucidar algunos de los procesos que marcaron la historia de lo que puede llamarse el antiguo Camino de Tierra Adentro. En particular, llevan a reconocer la importancia de Teotihuacan en esta historia norteña, no como metrópoli en expansión, como se había propuesto hasta ahora, sino en el cuadro de la diáspora de su población, a raíz de su destrucción violenta. Estos avances hacen posible un diálogo fructífero con los esfuerzos actuales de estudiosos hopis para confrontar los aportes de la arqueología con su tradición oral que reporta las migraciones de varios de sus clanes desde un lugar de origen llamado Palatkwapi, que podría ser Teotihuacan.
