Resumen
Introduction: The academic performance of university students can be influenced by various factors, such as the support they receive from their families. Objective: Determine the factors associated with the perception of academic performance in university students in Latin America in 2023. Method: A cross-sectional design was applied. Students from various university courses who agreed to complete an online questionnaire disseminated through social networks in Paraguay, Peru, Chile and Cuba were included. The questionnaire measured demographic data, perception of academic performance, and family support. Incomplete questionnaires were excluded. Descriptive and analytical statistics were applied. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee. Results: 500 university students were included, the majority from Paraguay (53.4%). The female sex predominated (75.4%). The most frequent careers were in the health area (94.6%). 91.4% attended private universities and 72.4% did not have their own financial income. Students perceived good academic performance in 38.8% and family support in 40%. Poor academic performance was significantly correlated with family dysfunction (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Family support was a factor of good academic performance in university students. It is recommended to periodically explore family functionality to support students who report a lack of it.
