520.3.#.a: Mixco presents several texts in Paˀipai, theonly member of the Pai branch of the Yuman language family that is found inMexico. He notes that at the present time there are only two villages wherePaˀipai is spoken by a total of about 300 persons, San Isidoro inTrinidad Valley, and Santa Catarina in the Alamo region. He briefly traces thehistory of the area from the first peopling to the present day. The stories include traditional myths, such as the coyote stories and thelegend of Jalkutat, a dragon. Also among the texts are a briefmeditation on the role of the Native American in the history of Mexico, "TheRoot of Mexico". Another historical tale relates the tragic history of the waragainst the filibusters in 1911, which divided the community.
