Resumen
This article focuses on the Diario de los Niños (1839-1840), Mexico’s first modern children’s periodical. While previous studies have placed this publication in the context of Mexico’s formation as an emerging nation and emphasized it as an expression of the prevailing liberal thoughts on science and education of the time, this paper proposes a more nuanced interpretation. The argument presented here is that the clear Catholic liberal tendencies of the journal, particularly those advocating and promoting the social roles of the Christian faith, are essential for understanding the education of children as social subjects and the importance attached to religion in society during the convulsive decades of the 1830s and 1840s. Special attention is given to the magazine texts that promote communal religious and moral visions.
