Resumen
This paper interprets the long-term structure and identity constructions underlying the complex of open spaces at the southern end of the urban center of Padua, in the location called "the valley." It analyzes the historical formation of the spatial articulation of the Orto botanico and the Prato della Valle, in relation to the immediate urban context, with a varied topography of wetlands comprised of reed beds and drier reliefs of crops and orchards; the territorial context between the Euganean hills and the fluvial fan of the Brenta river, along with the wider geographical scope of the Veneto plains, which lie between the Alpine arc and the Lagoon of Venice.
