520.3.#.a: Mixed methods (MM) combine the quantitative (quanti) and qualitative (quali) perspective in one study aiming to give depth to the analysis when the research questions are complex. ;More than the sum of the quanti and quali results, mixed methodology is an orientation with its own worldview, its vocabulary and its techniques, rooted in pragmatic philosophy with an emphasis on the consequences of action in the real world practices. This article presents four models of MM used in studies related to the Sciences of Health over the past two decades, these are: 1) model to develop instruments; 2) explanatory or explanation model; 3) triangulation model; and 4) longitudinal processing model, as well as some guidelines for their use in educational research. MM allows expanding the questions and theories to address reality and have an impact on teaching and learning processes. The answers obtained through the application of MM are rich, meaningful, and contribute to the understanding of educational phenomena which in turn may raise new questions. The MM offer researchers the opportunity to discover new orientations, try varied strategies and find ways that go beyond those derived from the use of a single method.

Resumen
Mixed methods (MM) combine the quantitative (quanti) and qualitative (quali) perspective in one study aiming to give depth to the analysis when the research questions are complex. ;More than the sum of the quanti and quali results, mixed methodology is an orientation with its own worldview, its vocabulary and its techniques, rooted in pragmatic philosophy with an emphasis on the consequences of action in the real world practices.
