520.3.#.a: A great many language courses are justified by claims that they ready students to be successful in some sort of academic context. In some cases; students may be told that they will be able to read bibliography in their specialty; in others; that they will be able to take part in mainstream educational programs that require them to know the second language well. The upstart is that; one way or another; all these courses have to do with teaching people to be academically competent. With this relatively short book; H.D. Adamson has made a very valuable contribution to helping language teachers deal with academic competence as part of their teaching. Although the book deals only with ESL teaching in US educational contexts; I feel it can be useful to teachers of other languages and in other contexts. It should also be of interest to teacher educators.
