Resumen
The article analyzes the medical care provided at the San Cosme and San Damián hospital in Antequera, Oaxaca, from 1703 to 1710. The main source is the only preserved book of the hospital which registers the admission of patients, death records from the Cathedral of Antequera, and reports on the hospital. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the hospital book records, this research contributes to the study of the diseases suffered by the city’s inhabitants, beyond the major epidemic events, as well as to the knowledge of the development of hospital infrastructure in Nueva Spain. Through a social historical approach, it explores instances of certain diseases, the origin and condition of the hospitalized people who suffered from them. The accounting of the information and its analysis allows for the answering of questions such as who were the people who went to the hospital, the type of condition they had and the hospital’s capacity to provide care. Therefore, throughout the analysis, the challenges faced by the hospital staff, the diseases that were treated, the type of population that was admitted, and the scope that this institution had were identified.
