Resumen
Based on the events that marked the travel attempts from Mérida —in the bishopric of Yucatán— to Popayán —in the New Kingdom of Granada— of the clergyman Diego de Ontiveros Hinojosa, who had to assume the deanery in the cathedral of the latter city, I propose that the study of the circulation of ecclesiastics between New Spain and the kingdoms of Peru allows, firstly, the understanding of the conditions of circulation of people, and, secondly, the analysis of the policy of appointment of ecclesiastical positions as a device for consolidating the confessional unity of the Hispanic monarchy. For this, consultations from the Council of the Indies, lists of merits and services, and letters from the Indiferente General, Audiencia de Quito and Audiencia de Santa Fe sections of the Archivo General de Indias [General Archive of the Indies] were revised. These documents are regarded from a microanalytical perspective that allows for various analyses at biographical, local, regional, and imperial scales. It becomes clear that understanding the circulation of clergymen requires studying distance as a problem in which the geographical complexities and the ecclesiastical policy of the monarchy are linked as an expression of processes of integration and fragmentation. Also, that the careers of clergymen —beyond their experiences, virtues, merits, and services— must be analyzed by means of the effective exercise of positions that were suspended due to their pursuits of promotion.
