Resumen
Electron counting and the 18-electron rule are important tools for the academic community because they offer valuable information about the metal complex in particular for predicting its stability and catalytic reactivity. Herein, we present an easy appliable algebraic methodology based on the covalent counting method that allows the student to count electrons with mathematical equations. Moreover, it provides further information about the metal complex including valence electron number, coordination number, oxidation state and non-bonding electron number. Across the manuscript we show how these four parameters are helpful for recognizing elementary steps in catalysis, and a decision tree is furnished to do so. Finally, we provide a methodology for interpretating catalytic cycles. This activity was tested with more than 150 students from Facultad de Química, UNAM with encouraging results in acquired knowledge for electron counting and catalytic cycle interpretation. Thus, we strongly believe that this strategy can be very useful for undergraduates, educators and researchers.
